How sexually curious is your neighbor?
Australia’s largest adult toy store Peachy analyzed Google search data and came up with a list of the top 10 most sexually curious states based on who is searching for spicy terms and asking sex-related questions.
The interesting results show that many people from conservative states are very curious to learn more, when “birds and bees” talk isn’t the norm and the Internet is just a few clicks away.
According to the study, Utah is the most sexually curious state, scoring a perfect 100.
The high ranking may be due to the state’s large Mormon population.
“Curiosity about sex is a natural part of being human, especially in places where openly discussing intimacy may still be considered taboo,” Amy Williams, sexual intimacy expert and CEO of Peachy, said in a statement stated in the statement.
Many people seem eager to get basic sex education, but they’re searching for some private knowledge on Google — especially in a state like Utah.
While the only “dirty” activity in traditional conservative religions is often drinking dirty sodas, in Utah people were most interested in “BDSM,” “polyamory,” and “voyeurism” in private browsers. (Anyone else watching The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives?)
“The stark contrast between conservative teachings and natural human curiosity has prompted many Utah residents to privately seek information online,” explains sex expert Williams.
“The data collected in our study highlights how people are turning to the internet for information they may not be comfortable discussing elsewhere,” she added.
Naughty New York follows Utah as the second most sexually curious state. New York, with its diverse population and progressive sexual attitudes, topped the list with a score of 96.12.
With so many cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives coming into play, it makes sense that New Yorkers are at the forefront of exploring new ideas about relationships and intimacy.
Williams noted that New Yorkers are “naturally curious,” and the city’s vibrant mix of influences may encourage people to explore all things sexual with an open mind.
Third on the list is Nevada – home to the notoriously sexy “Sin City” of Las Vegas.
In addition to the city’s reputation for adult entertainment and 24/7 nightlife, Nevada is also home to rural areas and conservative views, which could lead to an interesting mix of search queries, especially from the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas Suburban search query.
The state’s ranking of 90.63 suggests sexual curiosity extends far beyond the neon signs.
Washington state scored 87.47, and while it may have a reputation for being liberal-minded, gaps in sex education likely spurred a surge in sexy searches as people could only Google their questions.
“Even in generally progressive states, there are still disparities in access to education, especially for LGBTQ+ youth,” Williams said.
Meanwhile, Georgia (86.27), which has vacillated between progressive and conservative in recent years, also generated a lot of trending activity.
Many schools in southern states still teach abstinence-only sex education, leaving students online to learn about what happened on their wedding night.
“In an age where nearly everyone has access to the Internet, young people can satisfy their curiosity about certain topics without the shame of asking adults who may not be receptive,” Williams said.
“These data speak volumes about the way people seek out information on their own when traditional resources are insufficient,” she continued. “This study reminds us of the importance of comprehensive sexuality education and open dialogue.”
Turning teenagers to the internet for sex education has been shown to be harmful to their health – and is cited as one of the main reasons for declining condom use among teenagers and a rise in sexually transmitted diseases.
