A 50-year-old man decided to dye his 38-year-old wife’s hair just to make himself look younger, but ended up suffering a severe allergic reaction and was taken to hospital.
Scott Theodore says he woke up with a pillow covered in pus and “could have died,” and his wife, Katrina, doesn’t take the optimistic view of him. Instead, tell him he looks like the character Sloth from the 1985 cult classic film The Goonies. .
A month ago, delivery driver Scott decided to dye his beard black for the first time to cover up his gray hair and make Katrina look younger.
He claims he followed the instructions on the L’Oréal Men Expert box and did a patch test behind his ear, but he woke up the next morning feeling like someone had hit him in the head with an anvil.
After seeing his swollen face – which Scott thought made him look like the cartoon character Popeye – Katrina told him to get to the hospital.
“I tried dying my beard to make my wife look younger because she’s 12 years younger than me,” Scott, who is from Nashua, New Hampshire, told NeedToKnow.
“I have a few gray hairs that I want to get rid of but it’s a disaster.
“I woke up the next morning and Katrina said I looked like the sloth from The Goonies. She said I needed to go to the hospital.
“My white pillow turned yellow with pus and I felt like I’d been hit on the head with an anvil. It was awful.
“I thought I looked like Popeye because my head was so swollen. I felt dizzy, groggy, lethargic and unaware of my surroundings.”
Doctors told Scott he had gone into anaphylactic shock.
“When I got to the hospital, they immediately knew I was in anaphylactic shock and rushed me in,” he said. “I might die.”
He claims doctors told him the symptoms were a reaction to beard dye.
After antibiotic treatment, Scott was discharged from the hospital the same day, but he had to take 10 days off work to recover.
He said he contacted L’Oréal customer service by phone two days later, but claims the brand didn’t apologize or offer any compensation for the days he had to take off work.
“I want to raise awareness and let people know that there are chemicals in these dyes,” he said. “No one should almost die from hair care products.”
