A new all-in-one digital wallet

JR East announced today that starting in late 2026, the system powering Japan’s most popular transportation card will launch a new code payment feature called Teppay (stylized as teppay), a comprehensive QR code payment and remittance service. This highly anticipated update will first arrive on Mobile Suica in the fall of 2026, and then expand to Mobile Pasmo in the spring of 2027.

This isn’t just a small tweak. This is a direct solution to a major user complaint. A recent survey conducted in the Tokyo area revealed that 90% of people feel stressed by the sheer number of digital payment options. By plugging a full-service payment platform into the apps you use every day, JR East intends to transform transportation cards into a one-stop digital wallet that makes everyday payments simpler.

The click-and-go functionality for gate and quick purchases will remain intact with Teppay.

Teppay basic functions

Teppay is essentially an extension of existing payment systems on Mobile Suica or Pasmo. It offers three convenient features: standard QR code payments at retail stores, peer-to-peer balance transfers (sending money directly to Teppay accounts), and a virtual prepaid card called “Teppay JCB Prepaid”. In addition, the transaction amount allowed by Teppay is much higher than the traditional 20,000 yen limit of the current transportation IC card.

Top-up your Teppay balance is designed to be flexible, simple, and come with a variety of options. You can link your bank account, deposit cash at an ATM, or use an affiliated “View Card” credit card provided by JR East Group.

On top of that, the service will launch “regional limited” coupons. This feature is designed to make it easy for you to use local government stimulus packages and premium digital gift certificates.

Keep in mind that users do not need to download anything new or sign up for additional services to use Teppay. If you already have Mobile Suica or Pasmo, you will only see a new button appear in the application.
