In the kink community, a collar can mean a variety of different things. For some, it’s just a sex toy, a way to tug someone on during a scene. For others, it’s a symbol of a thoughtful commitment to a D/s dynamic. There are countless variations between these two extremes. A collar can mean whatever you and your partner want it to mean.

Collars are probably the most commitment-related items in the kink world, much like wedding rings in the vanilla world – but just like wedding rings, some people find that, for various reasons, a choker doesn’t fit their lifestyle, so they’d rather wear something else. Maybe their job doesn’t allow them to be known as the eccentric, nosy family member who asks too many questions, or their health doesn’t allow them to tuck in their necks—no matter the situation, there’s always a solution. With that in mind, here are 3 categories of collar alternatives for you to consider…

Mark (temporary or permanent)

Sometimes the purpose of wearing a collar is to serve as a constant reminder throughout the day that you are in a D/s relationship with the person you like, and that they like you back. to this end, anything A collar that reminds you of your partner can be a useful alternative to a collar, as long as it’s something you carry with you throughout the day—whether it’s a well-placed hickey or bruise, their initials in marker, or even a tattoo of a meaningful symbol of your relationship.

A piece of jewelry or other wearable accessory

I once knew a charming lady who wore a stunning diamond necklace. When I complimented her, she winked (knowing I was weird) and replied, “It’s what you think it is.” Which is to say: a choker symbol can be anything from a priceless pendant, to a nose ring, to a piece of twine tied around your wrist. What’s important is that you and your partner agree on the shared meaning of the object in question, and that you’re happily reminded of it every time you notice it in your dynamic.

sex toys worn under clothes

Chastity cages, wearable vibrators and butt plug tails, oh my! These products aren’t always practical (for example, I don’t recommend wearing anything metallic through the TSA scanner), but they’re great for keeping your sexual relationship in mind. As a bonus, they can create sexual arousal throughout your day, like a once-and-for-all form of foreplay. Neat!

Have you tried such an “alternative collar”? What did you bring?
