Cheap couple holds 7-hour wedding but no dinner

During the evening wedding reception, the bride and groom kissed on the dance floor, surrounded by celebrating friends and string lights.

These guests left hungry.

There’s no denying that weddings are incredibly expensive these days, but if you invite your guests to a 7-hour black-tie wedding, you can at least provide them with food.

One disgruntled attendee took to Reddit’s r/weddingshaming forum to share their exact experience at a recent wedding they attended. “…Invited to a black-tie wedding with hors d’oeuvres but no meal…a one-hour ceremony followed by a six-hour hors d’oeuvres reception with no transportation to the hotel where reservations were required and no transportation across the highway from the church to the reception…”

The OP adds that the couple specifies on their wedding website that guests should expect a dance night, which sounds like fun, but doesn’t have any fuel other than some shrimp cocktail and deviled eggs? This is wedding crime.

Commenters didn’t waste any time giving their opinion on the matter.

“One of my pet peeves is the black tie dress code when they don’t attend black tie events,” one comment read.

“Your wedding gift should be ordering pizza at the reception,” someone quipped.

A former bride chimed in, pointing out that many engaged couples don’t realize how expensive things can get when planning their wedding, but that doesn’t excuse people from being stingy with their guests: “When I got married, we had a very formal vision. But we were young and hadn’t quite thought it through. Booking a formal venue meant a formal invitation to convey the dress code, which led to meal type, cake and flowers etc.”

“We did it, not with black tie, but with nice formal dresses and suits for the male guests (I’ve only ever seen one man wear black tie to a black tie wedding anyway), but our budget was higher than we expected as a result,” they continued to comment.

This is definitely not the only cheap wedding, as another user shared, “The last wedding I attended, the bride and groom fed us dinner and brought out chicken nuggets around 10pm to feed everyone for round two during the party. I won’t be attending any of these fake formal events.”

As bad as this wedding sounds, it’s not as bad as a wedding where a couple actually charges guests for water.

On the same Reddit forum, an exasperated guest explained how the wedding took place on a sunny, humid, 95-degree day, yet the bar charged $2 for water.

Can you imagine?
