What is a lucky bag?
The countdown to the New Year is about to begin, and with it comes the lucky bag shopping season. lucky bag is an annual retail tradition. The combined Chinese characters are Fuku (Fu, meaning “good luck”) and Fukuro Fukubukuro (bag, meaning “bag”) is designed to create “lucky bags,” which come in all shapes, sizes and categories, from snacks to luxury brands. The bags in the store are filled with a variety of products – adding up to a value greater than the bags are selling for. This is a great way to clear some inventory and thank your customers for another great year of business with discounts and gifts.
Traditionally, these lucky bags are supposed to be a mystery. Shoppers take the gamble without knowing exactly what they are buying; but the fun is in unboxing and seeing the surprises inside. Recently, lucky bags have begun showing customers a preview or full display of their inner treasures. Sometimes lucky bags even have original merchandise made specifically for them.
With so many lucky bags to choose from, here’s a guide to some of the most popular ones – and how to find them.

Bookings from December 5th to 16th

The bags are filled with a variety of fun previously released products, but there are also specially curated items to suit the zodiac theme for the coming year. Since 2026 is the Year of the Horse, both tiers of lucky bags will contain a Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse plush toy dressed as a horse. Customers are also guaranteed to get a stainless steel bottle with Mickey or Minnie graphics.
Customers can choose between 3,500 yen or 10,000 yen bags, with claims that the goods inside are worth an estimated three times the price of each lucky bag.
The pre-order period is from 10:00 on December 5 to 9:59 on December 16. The luggage is expected to arrive around December 27th.

Pre-orders start on December 22
even Combini Have your own lucky bag. 7-11 convenience store‘s lucky bag (3,300 yen) includes a kitchen timer in its signature convenience store shape and a rubber coaster inspired by Seven Café coffee cups.
In addition, the lucky bag also comes with two horse-themed plates in collaboration with the Pantovisco brand and Sou Sou brand hand towels. Customers will also receive a set of electronic coupons issued through a dedicated LINE account (QiDreams event reception). The discount includes 11 100 yen coupons for Seven Cafe and smoothie drinks, 12 100 yen coupons for rice balls and sushi, five 100 yen coupons for Seven Dessert products, and five 100 yen coupons for sandwiches and rolls.
One-tenth of the bag will also receive an additional 7-Eleven prepaid card worth 500 yen, which can be used from December 22 to March 31, 2026.

Pre-orders start on December 10th
mr donut This year they will celebrate their 55th anniversary. The beloved donut chain opened its first Japanese store in Osaka in 1971, and although it originally grew out of the United States, it has become Japan’s No. 1 donut shop with more than 1,000 locations nationwide. Mister Donut offers a range of delicious flavors and donut styles, often in collaboration with popular characters like Pokemon.
To celebrate their impressive schedule, Mister Donut’s 2026 lucky bags are themed around the company’s history and include original characters and vintage merchandise featuring illustrations by Osamu Harada.

Two lucky bag varieties will be available. The smaller bag (Â¥3,800) will include a donut decorating kit, a Pon de Lion character mini tote bag, a set of two hand towels, a thank-you note and a donut exchange card that customers can redeem for 20 donuts until May 31. Customers who purchase this set are also eligible to participate in the Osaka Duskin Museum Experience Lottery, which includes accommodation, or a Mister Donut voucher worth 5,000 yen.
The larger lucky bag (6,500 yen) will include a drip coffee set, a Harada Osamu tote bag, a Pon de Ring stuffed toy, a hand towel, a schedule, a thank you note and a donut exchange card for 35 donuts. Customers who purchase these lucky bags can enter a draw to win an original Osamu Harada mug or a Mister Donut voucher.
Lucky bags can be pre-ordered in-store and online starting at 5:00 a.m. on December 10th, and will be available in limited quantities starting on December 26th with no need to pre-order.

Bookings from December 9th to 29th
In Japan, he is better known by his nickname “Thirty-One”, Baskin-Robbins is another American chain that has enjoyed great success in the Japanese market since its debut in 1974, and now offers seasonal flavors unique to Japan, such as matcha bean honey and sakura cheesecake.
The 2026 Baskin-Robbins Lucky Bag comes in two sizes. The smaller bag (2,500 yen) comes with a tapered keychain in the popular Popping Shower flavor, spoon bobby pins and a set of two silicone bands. Customers will also receive five 500 yen tickets that can be redeemed for ice cream at the store. The larger lucky bag (3,500 yen) comes with seven 500 yen tickets, as well as an original kitchen timer and cup-shaped keychain.
Pre-orders for the lucky bag mobile phone will be open from 10:00 on December 9 to 20:00 on December 29. Mobile orders can be picked up in store from January 1st to January 7th. Lucky bags will also be available for purchase from January 1st, no reservation is required, while supplies last.
Harajuku Laforet
Bookings from December 1st to 31st
Laforet department store is famous for having some of the most popular fashion brands in the heart of Harajuku. As a result, Laforest is also notorious for the crowds during the lucky bag sales. Fortunately, department stores have dedicated website List all participating brands and their respective discounts all in one place.
There are three types of lucky bags: a regular mystery lucky bag filled with discounted goods, a limited edition lucky bag specially created for Laforet Harajuku, and a visible lucky bag that displays its contents in advance. Participating brands include Jeanasis, An Mille, RNA Media, Maison de Fleur, Alice and the Pirates, Atelier Pierrot, Metamorphose and Nile Perch.
The general pre-order period for lucky bags is from December 1st to December 31st, but the sales date may be different in some stores. Please check the listing to verify respective deadlines and whether online or in-store reservations are required.
In addition to the lucky bags, Laforet’s boutiques will also be offering New Year’s specials, including markdowns and sample sales.

Bookings from November 25th to December 24th
As the second largest fast food chain in the country after McDonald’s, mos burger It’s been serving classic burgers and innovative bun pies since the 1970s. The burger joint will be a collaboration with Sanrio and My Melody and Kuromi, who are celebrating their respective 50th and 20th birthdays.
Mos Burger will be selling limited-edition lucky bags (5,000 yen) filled with collaboration merchandise. The cute drawstring bag includes an eco-friendly bag that folds into a character bag (choose between My Melody and Kuromi when booking), a set of two plates and a satin bag. Customers will also receive 10 500 yen meal coupons that can be used at Mos Burger restaurants nationwide. Coupon valid until March 31, 2026.

Bookings from November 18th to December 25th
Coco Restaurant It is an American family restaurant introduced to Japan in the 1980s. With its family-friendly atmosphere, drinks bar, and extensive menu, Coco’s is a nostalgic restaurant for locals and tourists alike.
Coco’s Fukubukuro (4,400 yen) offers a winter-themed set packed with items to cheer up during the cold season. The lucky bag itself is a beautiful Nordic style knitted bag with cocoa style cutlery and hamburger steak graphics wrapped around the design. Inside there is a ceramic mug with a tea strainer, a stainless steel spoon, an exclusive blend of strawberry honey tea, tape, paper clips and eight 500 yen vouchers that can be used between December 26 and June 30, 2026.
Pre-orders start on November 18th, and the bags will arrive between December 26th and January 6th. To reserve a lucky bag, tell the cashier you would like to reserve a lucky bag and you will receive a form to fill out. Reservations cannot be made by phone or online.

Jins’ lucky envelope (6,600 yen) contains a 10,000 yen or 14,000 yen coupon and is valid from January 1 to March 1, 2026. Creative Design – The coupon is actually printed on the eyeglass cleaning cloth. When you’re ready to use your coupon to purchase new glasses, show your lucky cleaning cloth and a Jins staff member will cut off the coupon portion. Please do not cut the fabric yourself or the coupon will be invalid.
In addition to the coupons, Lucky Cloth also allows you to take advantage of two benefits that can be used year-round: 2,026 yen off your bill and 10% off for companion purchases. During the event period (January 1 to December 31, 2026), these discounts can be used unlimited times, and are limited to one discount per transaction per day.

Takashimaya
Bookings from November 26th to December 14th
Takashimaya Department stores will be offering luxury lucky bags to ring in the New Year with good luck. Under the supervision of fashion and fortune-telling editor Yoshifumi Aoki, the bags are limited to 20 people via a lottery system.
The lucky bag (39,000 yen) includes a limited-edition wallet and coin box set made of horsehide to match the 2026 zodiac sign. The set will be placed inside a “purse futon” to “give your wallet a rest and improve your financial luck.”
This lucky bag also comes with an exclusive experience. On February 8th (13:30-15:00), the lucky bag winner will have a private formal visit and tea party at the Matsuya Salon in Tokyo Daijingu Shrine. Guests will enjoy cherry blossom pink jelly, strawberry jelly and soy milk mousse. Then, customers can also make an appointment for eyebrow and skin tone retouching services provided by makeup artist Miwako Mizuno at Nihonbashi Takashimaya Belle Sympathique Beauty Studio from February 20 to 22 (11:00-17:30).
