The disturbing truth about sex work revealed on reality TV
Disturbing and dark truths about the sex industry have been revealed as it begins to target women as young as 18.
spicy summer is a YouTube reality series that follows four OnlyFans employees as they strive to make it big in the industry, attending XX Academy to help grow their platform.
The show’s stars include Arabella Mia, who turned heads while performing stunts with Annie Knight on Bundy, Gigi Linkss, who kissed King Charles on the cheek during his visit to Australia, and former strippers Maxine Kuerschner and Willow Ray.
Ray, also known as Charlie, was announced 24 hours after the first episode aired, after her father, NSW Nationals leader Dugald Saunders, quit politics.
He said it was related to several sick family members.
The second episode of the series revolves around the 19-year-old girl from the countryside, who expresses her feelings candidly.
It was announced during the episode that four women would be taking on the photo challenge, with Rae revealing she was “down” and “scared”.
“I knew we were going to do it in lingerie,” she said on camera.
“I think it scared me because I compared myself. They both had really nice bodies – they were skinny, they both had really nice bums and boobs. I looked at myself and thought ‘I’m never going to be as beautiful as you’.”
Rae revealed on the show that she dropped out of school at age 13 due to severe bullying that left her unable to get out of bed. All the nasty comments were directed at her appearance.
That, coupled with seeing people who “looked nothing like her” being praised for their appearance on social media, left her with serious body confidence issues.
However, on OnlyFans, men praised her. She claimed it was something she had never had in real life. The other women jumped to join the challenge, and Ray was visibly upset and had to leave the room.
Josh Fox, the man behind the reality show, immediately jumped up to comfort her. He said he started the series to explore how OnlyFans and sex work can be sold as a dream – which is not the case.
After Ray broke down, he admitted that he wished the 19-year-old had quit the platform and his show on the spot and gone home.
“But she won’t, and I know she won’t, because the idea that the sex industry is a dream is so ingrained now,” he said.
“Young people have basically been algorithmically brainwashed into believing this. Social media feeds this narrative to them every day – whether they want to see it or not.
“Willow is proof of that.”
He said one of the most disturbing things he’s learned in the sex industry is that people are counting down the days until they turn 18 so they can join these platforms.
He said current creators are encouraging this line of thinking. He added that this meant those joining the industry had no chance to consider the potential impact.
And, he wasn’t wrong. Each of Rae’s co-stars on the show commented on her age.
“Honestly, the thing is, the younger you are, the more money you make because that’s what men want. Men always want younger girls,” Kuersner said.
Meanwhile, Arabella said: “Nineteen is a prime time. In this industry, you get into MILF at 23, so she has to have the confidence now to do her best and implement a good business plan. She has a lot to learn.”
In pornography, a MILF is seen as an “older” woman, inherently a mother.
“Girls her age in America are making money,” Gigi said, adding that Willow has been given a lot of opportunities as a result.
Reese, one of the people behind XX Academy, pulled Ray aside and reminded her of the “huge advantage” she had over the other women on the show.
Ray said she knew people thought she was too young to be in the industry, but she said ultimately she was legally an adult.
“This is prime time for me. Men love teen content creators and they’re willing to pay a lot of money for it.”
Fox called the whole thing “uncomfortable” and said questions should be directed at the men who create this “youth and innocence” demand in sex work that leads to 18-year-olds jumping on the platform.
“We should be paying attention to them,” he said.
This isn’t just a countdown until a real child gains legitimacy before the law. Arabella revealed she was often asked to pose in schoolgirl outfits. The man even told her “you remind me of my daughter.” The 27-year-old said she has never looked younger on the platform and that she has always been proud of her age.
“But I said no to that, and it kind of scares me that they might do it in real life,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kurschner revealed that a man booked her for six hours while she was working at a strip club. The entire time, he kept telling her how beautiful she was and how much he wanted to have sex with her.
“As I turned to leave, he said, ‘Actually, you know why I like you so much?’ and I was like, ‘Oh, why,’ and hopefully he’d have something nice to say about the way I looked or something like that,” she said.
“He looked at me and said, ‘You look just like my daughter.’ Mind you, I asked him about his family. He had a 16-year-old daughter. When I heard that, I felt sick. I froze.”
The women said they were often told men’s deepest, darkest secrets on the platform.
It’s not surprising that men focus on youth, as celebrities like Natalie Portman was influenced by “Countdown” on her 18th birthday.
“My local radio show started counting down to my 18th birthday, which, to put it mildly, is the day I can legally get laid. Movie critics talked about my budding breasts in their reviews,” Portman said at the 2018 Women’s March.
It was previously reported that there are 1.2 million American women aged 18 to 24 on OnlyFans.
