Mariquita talks with Jane Percy about her recently released book, Girls Play Dead: Acts of Self-Preservation. Based on her essay “What People Do About Rape,” “Girl Plays Dead” expands the conversation about various reactions to sexual assault and rape, incorporating personal stories and historical context. Their conversation covered the common reactions of cataleptic and paralytic immobility, the evolutionary ways humans have evolved to survive trauma, and how colonialism and individualism hinder the recovery of some survivors who would otherwise benefit from collectivism and community care.
