Intact statue of Sleeping Cupid discovered in Croatia
A rare complete statue of Sleeping Cupid has been unearthed in Pula, Croatia. Made of fine-grained white marble, it dates back to the 2nd century AD, and its exceptional quality and condition make it one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made in Pula.
The sculpture was discovered last week on Castropola Street in the city’s historic centre. It was found in a room of an old residence. The room had collapsed, but archaeologists found numerous marble fragments, as well as the remains of wall and ceiling frescoes decorated with colorful paint. The purpose of this room is still being studied.
The sculpture found in the collapsed layer is 98 centimeters (38.6 inches) long, 44 centimeters (17.3 inches) wide and 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) high at its highest point. It depicts Cupid as a naked winged boy sleeping sideways on a lion’s skin with his head resting on its head. This is a reference to the story of Cupid stealing the Nemean lion skin from Heracles, a metaphor for how desire can overcome strength. A small lizard splayed beside Sleep, its two left legs touching the edge of the lion’s skin.
Sculptures of Sleeping Cupid were popular in Roman art, in homes as garden ornaments or fountains, and on tombs and altars as funerary monuments, especially children’s graves. About 200 marble Cupid sculptures similar to this are known. Only about 25 of them contain lizards, animals that symbolize rebirth and new life.
The piece has some damage, probably suffered in antiquity: one of the wings is broken off Cupid’s back, and there is a crack in the oval base that runs diagonally from the edge near Cupid’s knees to the lion-skin feet on the other side. It has become somewhat blackened due to a fire that occurred in Domus in ancient times.
Cupid is now being laser cleaned, documented and studied. When the conservation is complete and the damage has been repaired, the statue will be displayed as part of the permanent collection of the Archaeological Museum of Plaistra.
