According to new AI-driven data, kissing, licking, tickling and biting is cool – but the most obvious signs are that a person sees you as a partner or a primary squeeze, and their hug is their hug.

“Hugging is an important nonverbal social influence behavior that plays a crucial role in romantic relationships,” the study author of the Hamburg Medical School in Germany explained in a September report.

“The results show that romantic partners embrace longer than platonic friends.”

For these findings, researchers led by Sebastian Ocklenburg studied 60 participants — some friends, other lovers — repeatedly heading towards each other.

“The video of the hug was recorded using 14 high-frequency cameras,” the investigators wrote, then added that the video was analyzed “using three-dimensional mark-free motion capture software.”

Advanced AI software examines the duration of the hug during each squeeze and the positioning of specific body parts such as knees and feet.

“The important major impact of relationship status for the duration of the embrace shows that the average duration of the platonic friends is shorter than that of romantic couples (7.02 seconds),” the investigators revealed.

However, the location of body parts did not play a major role in the study.

“For foot distance, knee distance and pelvic distance, [AI] “There is no significant major impact of the relationship status or significant interaction with the relationship status,” the experts said.

Volunteers also filled out personality questionnaires to determine their neurotic level – tending to experience negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, and sadness, as well as conscientious, more caring but cautious traits.

In the embrace, some neurotics create greater distances between themselves and others, providing less tight squeezes.

Instead, serious embracers leave smaller space between their two bodies, giving a stricter hug.

Ocklenburg said to psychology today: “Next time you want to know if someone likes you as a friend, or maybe more, be aware of how long they hug you when they say goodbye.”
