A special mausoleum based on the monumental tomb of Augustus, near Lyon was found in Saint-Romain-en-Gal. The structure is the only one among 18 tumor mausoleums found in France, which is sufficient to confirm that it is circular in design, such as the tomb of Augustus.

A team of professional archaeologists and students dug test pits and investigated the area in public view. They discovered the foundations of a 19th-century house built on a semicircular cell surrounding the central cemetery.

The excavation this summer ended before the burial room was excavated. Work will resume next summer, and archaeologists hope they will find references to outstanding figures with wealth and political power to imitate the emperor in his funeral grandeur.
