Ramesses III Cartouche Discovered in Jordan - History Blog

Archaeologists have discovered an inscription containing the royal truck of the 20th dynasty pharaoh Ramses III (1186-1155 B.C.) in southern Jordan. This is the first inscription of the Egyptian pharaoh’s name ever written in Jordan.

The inscription is found in the southeast of the Wadi Rum Reserve near the Jordan-Saudi Arabia border. The joint mission of the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Saudi Heritage Commission is investigating the region as part of an initiative to document evidence of La Messe III’s military movement in the region.

Ramses ruled for 32 years, a period of great turmoil, when culture and the Near East collapsed around the eastern Mediterranean. Great political and economic forces such as the Mycenaean Heece and the Hittite Empire were trapped in violent chaos, causing difficult dangers in material comfort. During the collapse of the late Bronze Age, Egypt was constantly attacked by internal wars at sea and on land, which were constantly weakened, but Ramises’ long-term, stable leadership slowed down.

[Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi] Hawass emphasized the importance of the discovery, explaining that the inscription includes two trolleys with last names and thrones, Ramses III was the ruler of Egypt’s twentieth-century dynasty. The statement said the emergence of his name in Jordan showed a great influence and guaranteed further investigation.

“This discovery is crucial,” Havas said. “It can be more deeply understood for Egypt’s interactions with the Southern Levant and the Arabian Peninsula more than 3,000 years ago.”

Research on the discovery and analysis of inscriptions is underway, and a complete inscription explanation will be released after the investigation is completed. Egyptian and Jordanian authorities hope to work together in future excavations of the site to reveal any other significant evidence of Rameses activities in the region.
