Chapter 16 c. Frescoes found in Tudor hunting lodge –

Renovation of Tudor Hunting Lodge ash in Ingwood Forest near Ivegill, Cumbria has discovered 16th-century murals hidden under old plaster works. Wall paintings feature fantasy creatures and leaf patterns made with freehand hands in black and white. Surviving Tudor murals are rare, but in northern England they are particularly rare, making this example even more outstanding.

A small portion of the mural was first discovered in the 1970s, but the recent renovation of the main bedroom removed the failed plaster covering more work.

The paintings were made using SECCO technology, where pigments were applied to dry stucco, including eye-catching images of weird head profiles and dog heads emerged from decorative leaves. They are considered a textile design that reflects the exquisite taste of the building’s wealthy original inhabitants.

This is much more freewheeling and massive explanations of weird styles than I have seen before. Inspired by Domus Aurea’s meticulous wall murals, rediscovered in the 1480s and quickly occupied by Renaissance artists from Italy to Nordic Europe, the wall painting style of the wasteland uses beasts, deities, flowers, architecture, architectural features, often repeated in a vertical direction. The Tudor mural found in Culverley Old Hall in Leeds in 2021 is a great example.

Poet and teacher Henry Peacham wrote this style in this mural style in his 1612 art paper Gentleman’s Sports. He called it the form “Anticke” and is the Italian L’Antica.

Its combination is general and (I might say) for joy, (beasts, birds, fish, flowers, &c. There is no (as we say) rime or reason, because the more species you have in your invention, the more, but remember to observe one method or perpetuate the same thing in the whole whole without changing or changing.

If you list, you might draw nude boys riding and play with notes or bubble shells on wool, eagle, dolphin and c. A string of beads and ribs hung from the bones of the ram head, satyres, tritons, apes, cornu-copia’s, dogs yoakt, &c. After your own invention, draw cowboys, cherries, and any kind of wild road or vinet, and a thousand of these idle toys so you can’t be too weird.

The history of tree-like teaching analysis of original timber under house roofs dates back to 1561 or 1562. This means that roof timber was cut to the same period during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. This would make this a very early wall painting, as it was a recent example of English, as most people in the UK in houses after 1575, which would be the most recent mural.

The main building of the Ashes is on England’s National Heritage List and is designated as Class II*, a building that exceeds special historical interests, and as of this year its agricultural buildings and boundary walls have been classified as Class II status.
