Make Your Meaning: Billie’s Best Blog
My partner’s mother used to refer to the job of starting a oil knife factory. He often leaves our house in the morning with lunch buckets and says, “One other day at the putty knife factory.” Sometimes the work is tedious. But other times, he thinks he saves the world one hot tub at a time. He claims to be the cloak of the Hot Bathtub God. Very few people in the spa business are present on him. Knowing what he knows brings him a lot of satisfaction to make up for the tediousness of becoming a service technology. He loves to meet new people, enter homes, and help them solve problems. This is an act that helps people sacred their work. Even in greasy knife factory.
One thing we must give in this life is our time. Everything takes time. So choosing what to do every day is the moment we will give away in the future. I know how I feel when I work on the farm every day, caring for animals, managing gardens and forests, hoping to get help from the weather. I have a religious commitment to trivia because my job is love in action and my farm thrives. How many jobs have inspired this feeling?
When I worked as a marketing consultant in the business world (I have been a marketing consultant for 30 years), I never thought that my job was sacred. But I do feel the privilege of money and I carefully chose the method of donating my money and time. My job is opportunistic. My time is a way to balance greed with generosity. I think that’s still true for most of us. When we take the time to express our values, that is our gift to the future.
Recently, in view of the proliferation of artificial intelligence and robotics, I have been following the development of ideas about work. Digital services are said to replace many people in the workplace. OK knew. The tractor replaced the mug. The website replaces the travel agency. Software is replacing journalists. Not all good, but it may be inevitable. But I draw a line on the concept of the post-work world. Postal work. what does that mean?
I’m glad to see that robots in the ocean collect all the plastic waste have been dumped. It would be a genius if the robot could dig all the landfills and perform recyclable biodegradation from reusable toxic substances, so we could be more effective for land use. I would have hoped that there would be a farm robot to dig out cow dung from the barn floor and move it to compost. I am very happy that AI studies treatments for diseases. But let’s not be taken away by the utopian Malarky, which involves digital services that replace humanity in every job.
First of all, work is not a bad thing. Suffering is not good. The pain sucks. Work should not be suffering. That’s why we have robots. But when work is emotional communication between people, one is helping another, one teaches another, one inspires another – I think we need to appreciate ourselves. Mutual service is what gives us value in life. Most of us understand this instinctively. We tend to reach out and touch someone because it makes us feel good. For many of us, work makes us feel good. Work gives us purpose. Work is a medium of exchange. Being able to interact with others in an effective way is how we build the world.
New inventions always make some people weird. I read the proposal of a member state managed by sovereign intelligence. Pause on the phrase. Sovereign intelligence. Sovereignty is often defined as the highest political power or authority in the realm. The word intelligence completely loses its meaning in our modern times. But in this case, the term intelligence refers to software programs. Hopefully it’s better than Microsoft Word. The propaganda in the proposal is for an island in the Mediterranean, purchased by a group of oligarchs, who will then build artificial intelligence to manage the island and all of their citizens, who will pay about $50,000 each to join the fake country. The proposal is essentially a suggestion of software as a way of life. I want to know what they will eat.
Here are some things to remember when you hear the tone after work. The global economy is based on people buying and selling goods to each other, companies profiting from exchanges, and government tax revenue. How will people buy and sell things if no one works? What happens to income in a post-work world? What do businesses do in a post-work world? Who pays taxes to fund the government? Will restaurants become vending machines? Who would buy Tesla? Will people disappear? What’s the point?
Ironically, religious extremists are resurrected with fellow techno-bro oligarchs that could have run through software. But shit happened. Always do this. We went through a cycle. Tribes, belief systems, political parties, and ethnic boundaries always change. But we persevere.
Humans are the culmination species because we are creative in ways other people don’t have. We make sense. We give our life experience meaning. Our time makes sense because we know it has limits. This is the scarcity of time, making it valuable. That’s why how we spend time can be a generous act. Work, even if it feels mundane, makes sense because we spend the biggest resources to do it. Work is our contribution to the public good. The public interest is our common point and the common value of connecting with us. We don’t have a job, how should we deal with the time and who benefits?
Computer programs we call artificial intelligence are smarter than people, or they will soon be overwhelmed by computer programs. Maybe, maybe not. AI is just another product they sell. It looks smart because it’s really fast. They also say that using the same logic, the internet is better. The phone is better. The algorithm is better. Robots are better. But this is 2025 and we still have war, poverty, hunger, oppression and government corruption. What’s better? Therefore, buyers should be careful. We need to restore people’s strength. Consider how you spend your time. A greasy knife factory! Make your meaning.
