Rationalization is the process of not recognizing reality but distorting it to suit one’s own desires.

Pulitzer Prize- and Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner once wrote: “Man is endowed with ingenuity apparently to enable him to give himself shape and voice in crises, to protect himself from the truth Violation.” That’s fancy language, but recovering sex and porn addicts almost always get it because we’re very, very good at avoiding the truth. We do this by telling ourselves (and convincing ourselves of) all kinds of crazy lies and rationalizations to justify our addictive behaviors.
