“Stop embarrassing us all.”

A woman in a red dress proposes to her blindfolded partner on Sydney Harbor

A video of a woman proposing to her partner on Sydney Harbor has sparked controversy online.

Personalized Proposals and Co organized the unforgettable Australian proposal and this video has gone viral.

In the video posted, a young woman wearing a red dress takes her blindfolded partner to a stunning harborside location in Sydney.

When they reached a quiet meadow, he took off his blindfold and she got down on one knee to propose to him.

The man accepted the proposal and celebrated by kissing his partner on the forehead.

“He said yes,” the Instagram caption read.

The sweet video of two people falling in love sparked mixed reactions online, with some finding it hard to digest the fact that a woman was proposing to a man.

Some Australians’ views on the video appear to come down entirely to gender.

There is little criticism of the place or manner of the proposal, but of the fact that the woman was the proposer.

“Girl! Stand up and stop embarrassing us all,” one wrote.

“I’d rather fight a shark in Sydney Harbor than kneel down for a man,” someone else argued.

While some claim that if a man is “interested” and “loves you” he will propose to you, others call the whole thing “cringe-worthy.”

Many also criticized the regressive comments surrounding the proposal. It’s 2024…why shouldn’t women propose?

“This girl breaks the mold and any man will appreciate that. She is strong and knows what she wants. All you ladies take notes,” one argued.

Another noted that finding a man in Sydney was a “challenge” and there was nothing wrong with women “taking control” of their romantic destiny.

Others pointed out that it was mostly women shaming women for proposing.

“If social media has taught us anything, it’s that women hate each other more than they hate men,” one theorist said.

Some say this reaction exposes people as “hypocrites” who are not as evolved as they think they are.

“They want equality! They want the same pay! They want, now a woman proposes to her man and they don’t want her to do it because it’s supposed to be the man! Get over it,” one of them fumed said.

Psychologist Carly Dober says women proposing to their partners can be “confrontational” for some.

“This is because it challenges traditional gender roles and social norms of marriage,” she said.

“Historically, proposing has been defined as ‘the man’s role’, which reflects wider patriarchal norms where men are seen as the initiators of relationships.”

Ms Dauber said cultural expectations also played a role, as some people still viewed women proposing as unconventional.

“This behavior can be seen as undermining deeply held ideas about traditional femininity and masculinity, leading some to question what this means for role balance in relationships.”

However, psychologists say it’s completely healthy for a woman to propose to a man.

“I applaud women who don’t wait, express their desires and remind us that relationships can look different,” she said.
