Step 11, like step 10, is not a step that you do once and forget about. Rather, it is part of an ongoing (often daily) recovery ritual. That said, recovering addicts often find prayer and meditation to be somewhat confusing concepts. And some, especially those of us who begin the recovery process as agnostics or atheists, may struggle with the concept of having a higher power. For these reasons (and many others), step 11 can be difficult to execute. If you find yourself struggling with this step, rest assured that you are not alone. In fact, even the most religious members of twelve-step recovery groups sometimes become temporarily disoriented.
