Step 10: Ongoing Maintenance – Sexual and Relationship Healing

In step 10, we continue taking personal inventory and admit it immediately when we are wrong. Unlike most of the previous steps, Step 10 is done on an ongoing basis, usually every day, sometimes more than once a day. In fact, steps 10, 11, and 12 are considered “daily practice” activities. Therefore, these steps are sometimes called “maintenance steps.” The basic idea is that steps 1 to 9 will keep us sane and mentally healthy, and steps 10 to 12 will keep us that way. Yes, many of us do go back and rework previous steps (especially steps 4 and 5), but it’s usually done on an annual or other fairly scattered schedule. Steps 10, 11 and 12 need to be done regularly, continuously, every day (sometimes even every moment).
