Man, she didn’t like it!

Last week, Lori and I were at a thrift store. We found a few things we wanted and I sat in the furniture area with the cart while Lori browsed some more.

A young couple with a baby and toddler were looking at the offerings near me. From their discussion, I learned that he was the lead pastor of a church.

Then I heard this exchange.

Him: What about this?

Her: I don’t like it.

Him: What if we put it in the basement?

Her: I don’t like it.

Him: But only $20!

Her: I don’t like it.

At this point I was resisting the urge to say “Man, she doesn’t like this!”

Then he said, “How about we leave it? If it’s still here next week, we can reconsider it?”

Then I had to resist the urge to give him my business card and suggest that he needed some marriage coaching.

I never looked back to see what that woman didn’t like. But it doesn’t matter what it is. She had made her opinion known and nothing he said would change that. I suspect she feels he doesn’t care about her feelings. I mean, I feel that way.

If your wife says “I don’t like it” to you, does that carry the weight it deserves? I’m not saying she has the right to veto anything, no matter how you feel. But ignoring her preferences should be rare, and for good reason.
