The Dangers of Self-Deception: Facing Reality to Achieve a Better Life
On Quora, I see people desperately trying to convince others of something that is not true. Besides those who firmly believe that the earth is flat, there are other things that people swear by that are just as crazy.
I’ve come to realize that most of these people want their lies to be true. Reality is too scary or confusing for them. They try to live in a false reality that is safer and more to their liking.

We do this in many areas of life, including marriage, in ways big and small. I have encountered women more than once whose husbands told me who she was, and then I realized he was lying to her. Not to me, but to himself. Or maybe he was lying to himself about the kind of husband he was. He was doing this because his lies made him feel better about his marriage or himself as a husband.
The problem is that we can’t change the status quo if we don’t face the facts. Lies can’t protect us from the consequences of reality.
In what ways have you deceived yourself about your wife, yourself, or your marriage?
