The woman revealed that she didn’t know the virus, and netizens reacted in shock

Chantel Billy smiles for the camera as she discusses her unique sleeping arrangement with her partner

When Chantel Billy shared the news online that she and her partner were sleeping in separate beds, she didn’t expect the backlash she would receive.

Billy, 27, from Melbourne, has been with her partner for three and a half years.

She got candid about their sleeping habits and nighttime routines in a TikTok.

“My partner and I don’t share a bedroom. Every night at 7:30, we meet in his room, he makes us a cup of tea, and we watch an episode of TV together,” she shared.

“Then we each go home and get a good night’s sleep. I love us.”

The simple video has received over 2 million views, and the concept of couples sleeping in separate rooms seems to have made some people very angry.

Of course, people online also resonated with Billy’s admission about his sleep issues, with some sharing that their partners suffer from sleep disorders that prevent them from sleeping with them, while others said sleeping separately is totally “healthy.”

Still others saw it as a sign that Billy’s relationship was unhappy, unhealthy, and unromantic.

One wrote: “I hope love like this will never happen to me.”

Another said: “They are roommates.”

Another wrote: “This is crazy.”

Billy told news.com.au that he and his wife slept in separate bedrooms simply because it allowed them both to sleep better.

“He’s a heavy sleeper who snores and likes to stay cool all the time. I’m a light sleeper who sleeps with two duvets and a hot water bottle,” she explained.

“We spent a solid 3 years sacrificing our comfort and consistent sleep. Ultimately, we decided that trying separate beds and bedrooms was the best thing for our relationship.”

Billie said it was also a real joy to have her own bedroom, allowing her to really carve out her own space in the home.

“Having my own bedroom for the first time since I was a kid really fueled my creativity and I felt like I could fully embrace my own aesthetic without having to consider my partner. I think it’s really healthy to have your own space,” she said.

The 27-year-old believes much of the backlash stems from people feeling uncomfortable with relationship norms being challenged.

“Society has very ingrained ideas about what counts as love in a relationship and what doesn’t,” she said.

Billie stressed that it was also just a TikTok video, offering only a seven-second peek into her relationship.

“I’m shocked that so many people have accused my relationship of being lacking love. These people have no idea what my relationship is like,” she noted.

The young Australian said the backlash had been “very intense” and she knew she needed to have a thick skin when posting online, but she was still hurt by the comments and assumptions.

“I’ve received hateful comments before, but nothing like this,” she said.
