If you’re a fan of Netflix’s animated show Big Mouth , then you’ve no doubt seen the “Sleepover” episode that prominently features an old porn tape of Sylvester Stallone — complete with disgusting stains around the VHS cover.

But with all its crazy characters and over-the-top plots, many people might simply view it as pornography, the product of the wonderfully twisted minds of four creators.

The fact is…it’s real.

What most people probably want to know next is why is he putting up with all this in front of the camera?

Well, it’s easy to imagine our favorite stars living in luxurious mansions and buying expensive items, but remember, they are just like any other ordinary person. Before they became famous, they lived paycheck to paycheck or even lived on the streets.

Although he was born into a fairly wealthy family, he didn’t have the typical rich second generation like many rich kids do. While living in New York City in the 60s and early 70s, he worked any odd jobs he could find — with the ultimate goal of getting that big break in the film industry that every actor craves.

The job included cleaning feces from the lion cages at the Central Park Zoo and working as an usher at a movie theater. Interestingly, a lot of his extra income came from scalping sold-out movie tickets. This job ended when he tried to sell a ticket to “M.A.R.” to the theater owner. Haha, oops.

It was during a period of homelessness (forced to sleep in bus stops to keep warm) that he was offered the lead role. We can only imagine his reaction when he read the script and learned it was a pornographic film.

However, the 24-year-old was hungry not only for money but also for the limelight, as porn was not profitable at the time and was somewhere in between a dirty secret and an art form.

“It was either make that movie or go do some robbery, because I was at the end of my rope,” he told Playboy in 1978. “Instead of doing something desperate, I worked two days, made $200, and left the bus station.”

Stallone was vocal about his opinion of the script—he hated it. But he walked away with the cash. Five years later, tired of waiting to be discovered, he wrote the film (and his Rocky character) in just four days.

Porn producers had no qualms about cashing in on the actor’s fame.

They tried many times

First, they tried to “sell him the movie rights” so that he could “avoid re-releases” – aka blackmail. But Stallone responded, “I’m not buying it for two bucks.”

So the director decided to implement plan B. He remade the cover, added a new tagline “Italian Stallion” (obviously referring to the movie), and even sat in the theater, next to the editing machine, telling the audience that the original version was more hardcore, but the version they saw was edited to be softcore (which was a lie). Any scenes that were truly penetrating were edited in later, and with completely different actors.

Stallone didn’t publicize his involvement in the film, but he didn’t shy away from it either (even giving an interview to Playboy magazine). For him, the film wouldn’t even be classified as PG13 now. The film also helped him get out of a low point in his life.

It’s just a necessary stepping stone – many other actors have already taken the same step.
