Safewords in Movies and Television
There are a lot of movies and TV shows that touch on this idea (some seriously, some in jest).
CSI, Saturday Night Live, The Drew Carey Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Team America: World Police, The Simpsons, Castle, Eurotrip, Family Guy, etc.
If you’re at work and can’t watch (NSFW), don’t worry. I’ve attached a brief summary of the scene.
“Banana” from Family Guy
Dilapidated – Louise and Peter are having a responsible and very “parental” conversation about their concerns about their kids and drug issues at school…while both are dressed in BDSM gear.
“Flying.” From a trip to Europe
Dilapidated – The most lascivious member of the group goes to a dungeon in Amsterdam, where the dominatrix (Lucy Lawless) hands him a piece of paper with a safe word on it… which he ignores. After the dominatrix leaves, the male dominatrix comes out, and the horror begins, as Copper misreads the safe word.

The scene that made me laugh the most was the one where they discuss “catchphrases” (aka safe words) after their romp on the bed – talking about other characters in the game and what words those people might choose if they were in a similar situation. The humor won’t come across unless you’ve played the game, but it’s still fun to watch.
Not suitable for working hours – Female characters’ breasts are exposed
Uses in web comics
Cyanide and happiness
Two people and a man
Non-sexual use
- Live Action Role Playing Everyone had to stop and listen to the coordinator’s instructions – they probably had to do this every 5 minutes, as long as I could stay in character.
- Digging In martial arts, it’s hard to recognize because you’re already hitting someone.
- “Ceasefire” In war… maybe some idiot got into a friendly fire fight.
- “cut” In movies and TV. I wonder if you said this to an actor in real life if they would stop talking… worth a try…
