If you are visiting Tokyo for the first time, it is easy to visit the most popular tourist destinations. While places like Shibuya Crossing, Asakusa and Harajuku are undoubtedly iconic, Tokyo has many quieter communities that exude charm. While the list we compiled is by no means “undiscovered” or exhaustive, you should look at some areas of change pace here.

Yanaka is part of the Yanesen region – also including Nezu, Sendagi and Hongo – is a rare survivor of the Tokyo War bombing and post-war modernization. This charming district offers a distinct sense of ancient Tokyo, with its narrow alleys, traditional wooden houses and slower pace of life.

- Tennoji Temple: Yanaka is also home to numerous temples and is perfect for peaceful walks. Tennoji Temple is decorated with bronze Buddha statues, which is a famous highlight.
- Cat Town: Yanaka is known for its inhabitants of felines, which is a joy for cat lovers. Note cat-themed art, shops and real cats wander around.


Shimokitazawa
Shimokitazawa offers a bohemian atmosphere. It is a magnet for artists, musicians and young creatives, and it is known for its eclectic combination of vintage clothing stores, independent record stores, cozy cafes and live music venues.

Koenji offers a more bizarre, alternative atmosphere than a slightly polished peer Shimokitazawa. It’s a hub for punk rock, indie music and thriving second-hand scenes that attract a younger, more artistic crowd. Thanks to its long-standing restaurant and friendly shop owners, the area also has a comfortable, neighborly feel.
- Retro and thrift stores: Koenji is a treasure trove of used vintage clothing and accessories, especially selected options and men’s clothing.
