2,500-year-old iron fibula discovered in Poland - History

A rare, heavy bronze brooch dating back 2,500 years was found near the village of Śniatycze in the Lublin Voivodeship in southeastern Poland. It is the fifth fibula of its kind to be found in Poland and the only one not found in Lusatian culture burials.

The bow is decorated with two parallel lines on its upper surface. One end of the bow curves down into a sheath that holds the pin. The sheath then curves upward and has a button guard with a diameter of 1.4 centimeters (0.6 inches) on top. The spring and pin are missing, but the rest of the brooch is intact.

Its shape, size and decoration suggest that it is an ornament from the last period of the Lusatian culture, the Hallstatt D period (c. 550-400 BC).

“This discovery is of great significance for archaeologists. Both from the point of view of conservation, because we have a new archaeological site, which could be a Lusatian cemetery, and from the point of view of research and knowledge,” said Wiesław Koman, an archaeologist at the Zamość branch of the Lublin Provincial Office for the Preservation of Monuments.

Scientists believe that the flail head is an early medieval weapon that dates back to the 11th to 13th centuries. The flail head is round, about 7 cm long and 2.7 cm thick, with a large hole for tying a rope or belt. There are obvious signs of damage on the surface of the flail head.

The weapon is 15 cm long, with a slightly arched blade (up to 6.7 cm long) and a head that is 3 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Scientists believe that the axe is in very good condition.

Archaeologists plan to return to the site for a thorough survey. Artifacts found so far will be handed over to the Zamość Museum.
