A new study published in The Aging Men shows that men who drink grape juice regularly can significantly reduce their chances of erectile dysfunction (ED), especially in older men.

Researchers at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital in northern China found that men who drank grape juice five or more times a week experienced a 79 percent reduction in ED symptoms compared with those who drank no grape juice at all. Their analysis of 600 men with an average age of 47.2 years (300 with ED and 300 without ED) showed that men 40 and older had an 83% lower chance of ED, while men younger than 40 had an 83% lower chance of ED. ED odds increased by only one-third. The chance of benefit is reduced by only 27%.

Erection problems are common among older men, with nearly half of men reporting experiencing erectile dysfunction by age 60 or so, according to the National Institutes of Health.

According to Johns Hopkins University, an estimated 30 million American men suffer from ED, accounting for approximately 18% of men aged 20 and older.

“Grape juice is a non-fermented beverage that contains many phenolic compounds and non-flavonoid compounds that are beneficial to health,” study author Liwei Wua wrote in the report. “Based on studies of different varieties of grape juice, red grape juice is more White grape juice contains more phenolic chemicals and may have superior antioxidant benefits.”

Researchers also looked at the potential benefits of tomato, apple, orange and pineapple juice, as well as lemonade, milk, meal replacement drinks and soft drinks, but only grape juice stood out.
